If I am walking with two other men, each of them will serve as my teacher. I will pick out the good points of the one and imitate them, and the bad points of the other and correct them in myself.

Sources of Cadmium contamination in consumer products.

1. There are two main sources of Cadmium contamination:

2. According to REACH svhc list, there are 155 harmful chemicals in the list.

You will grasp the seriousness of the list when you notice that out of 70+ million known chemicals in planet earth, the most harmful 155 are included here.

Most in the svhc list are CMR, chemicals causing cancer, mutation and reproduction problems.

Among the 155 shvc list (updated June 2014), the following are related to Cadmium.

No. 139

No. 140

Cadmium oxide

No. 145

Cadmium sulphide

No. 155

Cadmium chloride

4. Steps to “detox” your supply chain:

4.1   Ask suppliers to provide material safety data sheet (MSDS), then check the CAS No. contains any banned substances such as heavy metals and CMR chemicals.

4.2   Ask suppliers to provide independent laboratory test report to show their raw materials do not contain banned substances.

These reports should be updated very year by supplier.

4.3   Ask your pigment and stabilizer manufacturers to phase out Cadmium in production.

4.4   Ask your suppliers to sign green production document to guarantee that they don’t manufacture and they don’t handle Cadmium products in their production.

4.5   Choose a suppler with a lower test results.

4.6   Test your product and keep replacing toxic manufacturer by green manufacturer until your own product’s Cadmium content reaches “not detected” level.

5. Toxicity ranking of different metals.

Refer to regulation 2009/48/EC, 19 toxic metals are regulated in toys production.

When comparing the maximum allowable limits of these 19 metals, the lower the limits, the more toxic the metals, we have the following list.

Ranking by toxicity

Toxic elements

Maximum allowable limits

Most toxic

Chromium (VI)

0.2 mg/kg

2nd most toxic

12 mg/kg

3rd most toxic

17 mg/kg

4th most toxic

47 mg/kg

5th most toxic

94 mg/kg

6th most toxic

130 mg/kg

7th most toxic

160 mg/kg

The top three are Chromium, Organotin and Cadmium.

Chromium comes from electroplating process.

Organotin comes from Organotin stabilizers

Cadmium comes from Cadmium pigments and Cadmium stabilizers.
